Neuschwanstein Schloß (Disney Land Castle)

Haha, okay, its not really Disneyland Castle. I named it that way because the Disneyland castle or the Sleeping beauty castle drew inspirations from this Castle. What its called in direct translation? I have no idea. New swan smth..... Does it matter? This is my first trip out of Munich since my arrival, i have been pretty much just walked around where i stay, so when my classmates asked if i wanted to visit that castle (on my must visit list), i agreed immediately. Plus there is this Bayern ticket, where it cost only 28 eurs for 5 person. The ticket allows you to travel the entire bayern area, however its valid for just a day. As yesterday marks the first day of Spring, there is a daylight saving time, where they added 1 hour to the time so that the daytime is longer. Heard of the term before, but never really understood that. It is really important though, because if my friend has not informed me, i would meet them at the Train station an hour late, by then they would have been halfway into their journey already. So for those of you who stay in our always summer singapore, you might want to take note :)

Really anticipated for this trip because of the super pretty pictures i saw, so as a shutterbug, its a must visit. For those of you who still have no idea which one i am talking about, remember the castle that stood in the clouds on the motivation poster? In fact i brought along my tripod so that i do not miss any night shots, should they wish to stay into the evening. With my batteries charged and my memory card emptied, i set off to meet my friends in the Hauptbahnhof (main trainstation). Weather was pretty bad in Munich, it was drizzling and the sky was overcast. As the castle was about 2 hours train ride away, i wasn't too worried. As we boarded the train late, i wasn;t able to get a window seat, until about 2 stops later, a family alighted and i had the entire 4 seats to myself. As a typical chinese, i whipped out my SLR and started shooting the farmlands that whoozed past the window. If you have been on such trains before, you would know that it is actually pretty quiet, so i became quite embarassed for everyshot i took as the camera shutter was pretty loud (thought it was cool when i first heard it). My ang mo friends were sleeping away while i went "chik eng chik eng".. haha. As the journey proceeded, i noticed more and more snow on the beautiful landscape. Became more and more excited as the sight flew by the window. I was excited because the snow there was very pretty, thick and clean, unlike in Munich, the only snow i saw was on the cars, the rest on the ground was muddy greyish water. My initial euphoria soon became more of concerned when we arrived at Füssen Bahnhof. It was snowing pretty heavily, so much so that i had to pull out the waterproof cover of my Deuter bag so that my equipment do not get wet. Thats when i realised that taking photos in such weather is a bad bad bad idea. My heart sank. Can;t even spot the Alps from here. =( Hopped onto a bus that took us further into the town where the castles are located. Yeah there are 2 castles here, the very popular Neuschwanstein Schloss and the Hohenschwangau Schloss. The latter is not so popular as it is not as pretty as the former. In anycase, there wasn't any castle in Singapore, so i thought why not?? Paid 15 eurs for 2 english guided tours in both castles. Visited the less popular Hohenschwangau Schloss first, which was next to the ticket "shop" on top of a hill. It was still snowing pretty heavily so my camera was still in the camera bag which was in my deuter bag which was in the waterproof layer. Ok so here is what i have learnt in the first castle. It was built by King Ludwig II 's father, King Maximallian in the 19 century. After the King Maximilian died, Price Ludwig II took over and the castle eventually became one of his uncle's property, after he died of some unnatural death in a Lake near Munich with his physcologistafter being declared mentally sick by the goverment of Bavaria. There are 4 stories i think, one entire floor belonged to the queen, the level above the queen's was the King's. Over the years, they received many Gifts from the various powerful people all over the world, Russia, the elites from Bavaria, for example. And there are kinky secret passages leading from the Queen's room to the King's. Wonder why they dun sleep together in the first place? Yeah i was wondering too. Perhaps the bed of the King was too small! It is slightly bigger than my Single bed back home. Haha. What an idiot. His reading chair looked more comfortable than his bed. After a short tour of 20 mins, we were out of the castle. They have a time limit for tourists. Its all stated in the tickets. Unwillingly took out my camera, braving the snow and hiding it under my coat after every shots. Took a few pictures of the castle from outside, non from inside as photo taking was not allowed. I think its a scheme to attract tourists who has never seen the inside before. This castle belongs to some duke guy who is now happily living in the Nyphemburg castle in Munich while at the same time sucking the money out of us curious tourists. What a life! Afte the visit, it was already noon time, so we headed to a restaurant for lunch. Had this thing call Schinkenbrot. On the description was "Open sandwich with smoked/boiled ham" for 5 eurs. Not too ex i thought till the food came. It was a plate of ham and a piece of bread. Surrounding the ham was some vegetables i never saw in my entire 20 years of life. But i must admit the food was pretty good, but far from filling. And as all of us are students, we didn;t bother to give tips.

After lunch, we headed for NEUSCHWANSTEIN. There will be a 40 mins trek uphill before we reach the castle. There are 2 other options, first is to take a bus which is not an option in today's weather, the other is to take a horse carriage up the hill, costing 6 eurs per person. As cheapos, we all voted to walk up unanimously. Bear in mind that the snow just got even heavier. As we trekked up hill, i had to keep my eyes on the ground since it was lined with Horse Scheiße. Not helping was the melted snow with horse Scheiße flowing down my way, you can really identify the Scheiße as it was light brown and rounded in shape in a clump. Anyway, on the way up, i would think i had about 3 bowls of ice kachang thrown in my face. I assure you on the way up, the castle was never in my mind. Was busying avoiding the round clumps on the ground while brushing away the snow on my face and coat. Had to trek with caution as my addidas sneakers are not made to climb wet and steep slopes in the snow. Visibility was bad, like driving up Genting highlands. When we finally arrived at the Castle, we could only barely see it. Same like the first castle, there is a guided tour, where we had to wait for our number, before we could proceed. I had remembered a little more in this tour. Little background information first, the castle was built by King Ludwig II, as a form of Homage to Richard Wagner. Truthfully, i have no idea who that is, though he sounded remotely familar. King Ludwig II died before the construction was completed. In fact it was only 1/3 finished. The castle was built for retreat purpose. In the guided tour, we were brought up to the second floor where the Throne hall is, up 64 steps according to the tour guide. Interestingly the boy behind me counted with his grandfather who both counted only 63. In the throne hall, was the throne missing. Apparently it was not build yet and when he died, not long later, they opened it to the public as a museum. So it was a throne hall line with 2 million mosiacs tiles with italian marble platform and a 2000 pound chandelier hanging from the middle of the hall, without a throne. O_o Then we proceeded to the Bedroom, this time round it was prettier. According to the tourguide, 14 craftsmen spent 4 years working on the wood in his room alone. i must say their did a damn pretty good job from what i saw above his bed. Its like a world on its own up there above his bed. In his bedroom was a reading chair, which looked like a throne. But his favourite place of reading was in his study room. So much for the 4 years of work huh. All the walls of the castles are line with pictures or protraits some the work of Wagner. Pretty cool stuff there. Then in the middle of his study room stood this really big porcelein box, which really looked like an oversized overly decorated cookie container. It was a gift from another one of those powerful people and it worked as a document safe. Did i mention all the chandeliers are either made of precious stones with pure silver, or goldplated bronze with rare red marble. hahah. Last place of visit was a concert hall, apparently for Wagner's performance, which unfortunately was not used because he died a few days later after the hall was completed. What a shame!! Then came the souvenir shop. Lots of post cards and posters of the pretty castle but for a pretty cost as well! In fact they were selling almost anything that you can put the word Neuschwanstein on. Didn't bother to spend another cent on this sad day. My camera had to stay in my bag for most of the day, which really defeated the purpose of coming here to Neuschwanstein. I must say i was disappointed with this excursion, so was my other friend who also brought along his SLR. But we agreed to come again in summer, when the weather is much much better. Only the next time round we are skipping the guided tours. So if you ever ever ever come to Neuschwanstein in the future, choose the right season, and i will seriously discourage you going for the guided tour, unless you find it absolutely necessary to touch the inside walls of the castle, or the 4 years of wood craftmenship. Or if you are interested in the insanely big and pointless gifts (but pretty) that stands on the ridiculously long tables. So be WARNED! haha. You will be better off spending that 15 eurs on post cards at the shops on the way up. Saw a Hummer H2 on our way back. That got me more excited than the castles really....

Englischer Garten!

Woke up to a beautiful day, sun was shining, sky was blue, weather was cool. Its the second Saturday since my arrival here in the beautiful city of Munich. Have always wanted to visited the Englischer Garten, supposedly the biggest park in Germany, some say Europe? Either way, its one of the must travel destination when you are here in Munich. In the summer there will be naked people sun tanning in the middle of the park, but i heard old people formed the majority. Oh well, theres still a minority! hahah. Bent on not getting lost this time, i checked out my google map and remembered a few landmarks as a guideline. Set off after breakfast, praying that the weather will stay nice and pretty. (weather here is pretty erratic, one moment its raining, the next its snowing, before you know it, the sun is shinning again). Checked the temperature, at 11 celcius, i kept my outer coat in my bag, just in case. Armed with my Slr and a full stomach, i headed north. 20 mins into my walking, noticed the Maximilian palace, which was not suppose to appear. My gold fish brain has failed me once more. Decided the best way was to follow the river since the garden was in the downflow of the river. Trekked for another hour and the park was still not in sight, instead ended up at a club. Asked a kind gentleman in the club for
direction and walked for another 10 mins before i finally saw it.

At this time of the year, all the trees are bare, kinda sad. Wonder why people come to this park at this time of the year. Walked a little further before i came to this open air field. I was breadthless. Literally, after having walked 5 kilometers in the dry air, but mainly because of the sight that greeted me. Although it was noon, the sun was shining like it was in the morning, soft and warm. Super pretty. Elderly couples walk hand in hand, children sitting on their parents shoulders, couples lying in the open basking in the soft warm sun, spanish guitar buskers playing on the bridges. I followed the little stream before coming to a lake. It was full of life. There were so many ducks, swans! Away in the middle of the glittering water were couples rowing boats. Really a beautiful sight. My pictures do not do justice to the sights i saw. Anyway, after strolling round the lake and taking almost a hundred photos, i decided to head back. Its lunch time and my feet are blistering. On my way out of the park, came these 2 kids, one on a bike, another on rollerskates. Really cute. So i took out my camera and took a picture of them. They stopped and started whispering to each other while looking at me. As i approached, the two started gesturing at each other as if deciding who should be the one to stop me, then the boy looked at me and asked "Hast du ein Foto von uns machen???" ( have you taken a picture of us?) I laughed and replied "Ja! Schuaen sie?" And showed them the picture. They exclaimed in excitement. So cute! They asked if i was from Japan. =x Said no, from Singapur, bet they never heard of that before. As i walked away, could hear them shouting to their parents that i took a picture them! Got a picture here, go look at their expressions!
Oh yes, one more thing, i swear i saw a lion in the park.

Meeting my Tandem Partner

Don't feel like waking up these days. The weather is just too nice to be sleeping, with the fluffy snow falling outside the window, had to pull myself away from the bed 3 times, before i finally made it to the toilet. Cooked up my usual breakfast, and since it was so cheap, i ate 6 pieces of toasted bread (with cheese and ham of course) and 2 cups of milk. Woo! Running out of breakfast supplies again. So it has been snowing for the past 2 days. Kinda problematic to be out running around and taking photos. Want no snow in my camera man, no matter how rare it is. Plus the snow hits and melt in your face. The feeling? Try throwing some ice kachang on your face. Yeah, thats how it feels.

Finally got my Visa extended at the horrible KVR, which they happily sucked another 50 eur from me on top of what they sucked out from me in Singapore. About the procedures, firstly i had to go to this counter, where i submit a form and check if i have all the required document. So thats the first round of rejection. Got rejected onc because i was not registered in Munich yet. So this time round i went prepared. With everything in hand, i spoke to the Lady in German. And she understood! Wasn't much actually, merely stated what i needed and handed all my document to her. Second stage was in a room, where they register all my data and prepare the sticker for printing. It was all in german until she asked something really quickly, so i gave up. Rest of the conversation went back to english.Sigh. At least i tried!

For the past 2 days weather has been bad, so been home experimenting with food instead. hahah, cooked up some pretty decent meals, although simple, but tasty. For lunch, its my Baguette with Mashpotato and broccoli. Topped with my Apple juice. Dinner, as usual mash potato onions Bratwurst and more Broccoli. Wonder why the ingredients are so similiar? Well i have to finish them before i can get more stuff. The fridge and the cupboards are kinda full. So 1 big forest of broccoli will last me at least 2 weeks. Thats if i eat twice a day. And can't really keep meat for long, thus must eat them all up.

Ok, i shall go meet my tandem partner now. Shes a native german who wants to learn english, and i am a foreigner who wants to learn german. So we will be helping each other out and this is going to be the first time i meet her. So wish me luck!

5 hours later...
Sorry that i was in a rush so did not have time to explain myself. so how does this Tandem Partner ship works? My school, Tandem International has earlier asked if i would like to participate in this partnership learning activity when i first signed up, so i thought why not? I can learn more on top of what i am taught in school. So i had to state my native language and what i want to learn, and the school will pair me up with this partner, who wishes to pick up my native language, and can offer what i wanted to learn. Pretty good concept, except that both has to know abit of what he/she wants to learn because if not, it will be like putting a chicken and a duck together. So i was paired with this german girl, Maria Reidl. She is in one word, Super! hahah. She is 19 years old and very pretty! =x lives outside of Munich in a little village (Lindach) of 40 inhabitants! She can speak a little english, like how i can speak a little german. So we could communicate, though limited. It was yet another awesome experience to be able to interact with a native german. I can't remember how many times i have used the word "Awesome", perhaps i should start using the Thesauraus, but i think there is no other better word to describe my journey here thus far. For those who think that germans are cold people, come here and live for 2 weeks and your mindset will change forever! Sure there are those cold looks on the trams, but you can't be smiling to every single person can you? In fact i was so excited throughout the meeting that i forgot to take a photo with her! So those of you interested, you got to wait till next friday! =D

Restocking my supplies

After a relatively uneventful weekend, it is back to school again. My weekly train ticket has expired thus i have to get up earlier to get the ticket again. Thought that buying it every other week is quite troublesome, so decided to get the monthly one instead plus its cheaper. After being here for a week, i must say i have become much more confident in using my Broken German, so tried my German on the poor girl behind the ticket counter. Sure enough, she understood what i needed, but unfortunately, the monthly ticket would start only from the first day of every month. What a weird system! So lan lan had to get the weekly ticket. School was great as usual, one new guy from Scottland joined the class. Hes born in Nigeria, has a German wife and lives in Scottland. Happily married with 2 children. Children speak to him in Nigerian, talk to mummy in German and together they speak english. What an interesting way of communication! Anyway, halfway through the class, somehow one way or another (can't remember how exactly) he started discussing about this Rugby game he watched yesterday on TV with the British lady seated next to him. Both of them got so excited with their hands waving all over the place, that the teacher had to calm them down, while the rest of us watch in amusement. UK people. tsk tsk.

One thing about staying here in Germany, is that you really have to speak German, like it or not. At the supermarket, occasionally with random people seated opposite you on the train, not forgeting in class and even in a Chinese restaurant(still can't comprehend that a chinese can't speak chinese in a chinese restaurant). I have hardly spoke english other than with the Singaporean/Malaysian group, which i have in certain topics which i am comfortable speaking in German, spoke in German. Speaking in class was really fun and pressure free as they are all in the same level so they could understand you from the words you use, so to hell with the sentence structure although i consciously remind myself about the structure. It is also neccessary to speak in German since some of the classmates do not quite understand english. So yeah, my plan worked perfectly=)

Lunch was cheap and quick, took out one of the Baguettes which i bought in Aldi and threw it into the oven. If you are wondering what that is, imagine a hotdog bun, cut into half transversely, and put lots of cut ham and cheese ontop of a layer of tomato sauce? Still doesn't work? According to Ferdi. It looks like a dick. So much for living in a gay street. Anyway, food supply is running low already, ran out of my bread, and my dinner menu is empty. Decided to do a big shopping trip today.

On my shopping list (in my goldfish brain), Margarine, Broccoli, BRATWURST, onions, garlics, oyster sauce, tomato puree, mushrooms and hopefully rice. Using the ever impressive Google earth, i located the supposedly biggest ALDI in Munich. So again, using my Goldfish brain, i had remembered the location roughly and headed out. When i arrived at the Hauptbahnhof, i was lost. Only remembered it was near the Hauptbahnhof, main train station. Walked around the area, braving freezing winds that almost blew me over for over 30 mins, before i finally saw the Godly ALDI sign. Aldi is good for all the basic stuff like bratwurst and bread etc, but if you are looking for an exotic oyster sauce, you will be better off shopping at the expensive supermarkets. Well think of Seng Siong and Cold storage. In fact Aldi was so basic that i couldn't find a pack of Rice in their biggest store in the richest city of Germany. Bought quite a few items in that store, but thought i would be better off shopping at the Goetheplatz, where they have Aldi, Penny (another cheapo supermarket) and Rewe ( their cold storage). Went to Rewe and bought a bottle of tomato sauce for my Onion Bratwurst dinner.

Got home before the sunset, and started preparing for dinner. Menu? Bratwurst stirfried with ketchup and fresh onions, topped with Potato Puree and Broccoli. Sounds simple? Yeah pretty much since i will be cooking. But instead of just pouring powder into boiling water and stirr, i had to cut the onions and broccoli. Hated those onions. And the dinner turned out it was pretty good! Another successful attempt at cooking my dinner. But i think it was saved by the delicious Bratwurst and ketchup onions. Broccoli was a litte bland. Puree was a litte salty, read the instruction wrongly but still nice. Cleaning was dreadful. Used an arsenal of utensils to make my dinner possible, and now its time to wash them up. The small sink didn;t help at all. All in all, it was a wonderful and fufiling experience. Love every moment of it. Heres a picture of my dinner, bet it won't win the prettiest presentation award, but it sure won a place forever in my heart.
